Look around, where are you? What is surrounding you? More importantly, where were the things surrounding you made? My bets are on Made In China. Shopping this weekend inspired me to write a blog about the production of manufactured goods. You don’t get better than Saturday shopping, not in my opinion anyway. Trying on clothes in the changing rooms can be a loving experience as you peer at the price label. I recommend you glance one more time. Now what is it that the label is screaming under the bargain price of £10? Oh is it Made In China? Anyone would think I’m brilliant at guessing, but I’m not; I’m just observant. China has the world’s largest textile and clothing industry, so it’s not an astonishment that at least half of your wardrobe has been shipped overseas, before softly lying upon your delicate body…
Okay, so not everything is Made In China, but a hefty proportion of goods are manufactured in this industrial giant, China. The world around me is swamped in cheap products from China. Clothes. Shoes. Pens. Paper. The lot! Why is this the case?
In 1979 the Chinese government allowed investment from overseas. Some would argue that this was the turning point for manufacturing in China. I agree. Furthermore, the work of the country is also extremely relevant in correlation to that label on your brand new scarf.

Volkswagen (Germany) and Pepsi (USA) were the first big brand companies to locate their businesses in China’s newly unrestricted territory. These transnational corporations (TNC’s) have been able to acclaim much success, and are still relevant brands today. Is China responsible for the development of these reliable, trusting brands? So it seems…
China is currently the world’s second largest trader. With the increase in population, and the increase in requirement for products, that’s no surprise! China’s economy is soon expected to overtake America’s within the next couple of years. Wow. This industrial giant is soon approaching the position of world’s prevalent manufacturer. It’s only a matter of time. Soon…
Each year China manufactures 700 million shoes for the entire world. Girls, imagine the size you’d need your closet to be in order to hold all of them! Colossal. China doesn’t only produce textiles; it also produces everything else in your imagination can hold. 70,000 buses are manufactured each year. Electronics, bicycles, and cars too. China is also excelling in its pulp and paper industry. Who’d of thought: paper from China! And what about the London cab? The ionic London taxi is also manufactured in China. How ironic? Super Dry JAPAN coats, where are they made? I think you can see where I’m going with this. A Super Dry JAPAN coat is made in China. Not JAPAN, China! Even big brands from far away countries are producing their traditional goods in China.
How strange.

But why China? Give or take there are 196 counties in the world. That’s a large quantity when you think about the size of this lovely world. Why is China the preferred country? The country the world has nominated without, so it seems, a second thought. Why not England?
Look at the UK on a map. It is tiny! You may even need your magnifying glass view it. No wonder manufacturing cannot continue in this country, with rapid population increase we just don’t have enough space for factories galore. So businesses have to locate elsewhere, and it just so occurs that China perfectly suits the job. Fabulous. The industrial revolution in the eighteenth century resulted in a massive manufacturing spree. But what happens when raw materials run out? You go somewhere else to find them, hence the manufacturing movement to China. Industry in the UK no longer focuses on the producing of products, now instead the selling of goods and researching for a steady future.

Businesses are intent on doing whatever it takes, in order to increase the money that lines their back pockets.
Minimum wage equals restrictions for businesses. It means hindered profits which is a barrier they strive to overcome. But China is different. China doesn’t have a minimum wage which means businesses can make even more advanced profits than they could anywhere else in the world. China is a densely populated country. 1,330,141,295. An estimated 1,330,141,295 person workforce. Is it any wonder that everything is Made In China? It easily has enough residents to work in the manufacturing industry and keep it successfully afloat. TNC’s are opting to stay in China as it provides them with resilient workforces that are determined to work long hours, for the bare minimum pay.
All the while China can meet the demand of the rest of the world and provide us with what we want, then all the while your clothes, shoes, and everything else will be Made In China…
